What can you do when your iPhone unexpectedly stops working? Don't worry, there are a number of measures you can take yourself. For example, you can close all active apps, reset your iPhone or restore it to factory settings. We explain how to do this.
Close all running apps
On an iPhone 8 , iPhone 7 , 6s or earlier generations, you open the app switcher by quickly pressing home twice in succession. You close all apps the same way as on the iPhone X , by swiping two fingers up on the screen.
Reset iPhone
If you force-quit all running apps but your iPhone still won’t turn on, try resetting it. Resetting your iPhone will clear its RAM, which can be a solution if your iPhone is unresponsive.
You can reset an iPhone X, Xs, Xr or 8 in three steps.
- Press the volume up button in
- Shortly after, press the volume down button
- Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears on the screen
To reset an iPhone 7, press and hold the button on the side of the device and the volume down button at the same time until the Apple logo appears.
For an iPhone 6 or 6s, you must press and hold the sleep/wake button on the side and the home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears to reset the iPhone.
Reset iPhone to factory settings
If all else fails and your iPhone is still not working properly, you can reset your iPhone to factory settings .
Start by backing up to iCloud. This will prevent data loss; all data stored on your iPhone will be lost if you restore your iPhone to factory settings . With a backup, you can easily restore all important data later.
If your iPhone is still broken after going through all these steps, you can always consider buying a different device. You pay a lot less for a refurbished iPhone than for a new device. You are also doing something good for the environment and climate, because the valuable raw materials that are needed to produce a new iPhone do not have to be extracted from a refurbished model. Pretty attractive, right?
