On Wednesday, September 17, 2020 (7:00 PM Dutch time), Apple rolled out the new iOS 14. Every time, it's a question of what's new and which features you didn't know you missed when they weren't there yet. There are several useful new features in this update. Here are the most useful ones, in our opinion:
1. Clean home screen
- It is now possible to show all your apps on one screen instead of on different screens that require you to scroll left and right. You can have them organized in the so-called 'App Library'.
- In this library, all apps are grouped in folders that the operating system itself creates. There are 2 fixed groups: Suggestions and Newly Added.
- Additionally, iOS groups them based on type, such as Social, Productivity & Finance, Services, Creativity, Games, Travel, Information & Reading, Health & Fitness, Entertainment, Shopping & Food.
- And if the system really doesn't know, your app will be placed in the 'other' folder.
- And when you click the search function at the top of the library, all your apps will appear one below the other in alphabetical order.
2. Dynamic widgets
- There are 3 different shapes of widgets: 1 large widget that takes up half of your home screen, 2 elongated widgets, and 3 smaller blocks.
- The widgets are interactive and can show any information you want.
- Not only will they now be visible in the separate widgets overview, you can also place them between your apps on the home screen.
- This way you can completely organize your home screen with the apps and widgets you use most.
- Plus, every standard app has at least 2 different types, so there's plenty to choose from.
3. Search for emojis
- No more having to display 'typing' on the screen for too long for the person you're messaging, when you've been searching for a specific emoji for minutes and can't find it. From now on, you can easily search by keyword. Handy!
4. Tap on the back
- The back of your iPhone may seem unused, but nothing could be further from the truth.
- From this iOS, you can set a command or action via the Accessibility setting.
- Tapping the back of your iPhone will execute a specific command. Your device will essentially get an extra button.
- You choose this assignment in advance. If you often take photos with your iPhone, you can set it to open your camera when you tap the back twice.
- Or by tapping the back 3x, you take a screenshot . There are many options possible.
- This feature only works on devices with Face ID . And also when there is a case around it.
5. Reduced call screen
- When you were in the middle of gaming and you received a call, your screen was abruptly taken over by a large screen with the caller.
- With this new update, only a small screen is shown. While you are using your iPhone, now only a notification appears at the top of the screen when you receive a call.
- You will be given two options: reply to the call or decline the call. If you pull down on the message, you will get more options such as replying with a message or setting a reminder.
6. Choose your own default apps
- Yes! Who doesn't like to make their own choices? Now you can with iOS 14 when you want to use certain apps.
- You can now choose a different mail app than Apple's default mail app.
- And you can also choose, for example, to use Chrome by default instead of Safari when using the Internet.
7. Translation app
- Apple also added a new default app; the Translate app.
- With this translation app you can translate texts between 11 languages.
- After choosing the language, you can have written and spoken texts translated by this app.
- Unfortunately, Dutch is not supported yet, but you can translate to and from English.
- Other languages include Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Russian, Korean, German and French.
- What's super handy is that with this app you can also translate by speaking to your iPhone.
- By tapping the microphone you can record a text.
- The iPhone automatically recognizes one of the two chosen languages, so you can also speak in mixed languages.
- This conversation mode is made as simple as possible with a screen that is split into two parts, so you can see both sides of the conversation and easily have a conversation with someone you can't understand at all.

How do you update iOS?
- Check compatibility: Check if your device is compatible with the new iOS version you want to install. Apple usually provides information about which devices support the new iOS version. (You can check this in point 2)
- Back up: Before you begin updating, it’s a good idea to back up your iOS device to ensure your data is safe. You can do this via iCloud or via iTunes on your computer.
- Wi-Fi Connection: Make sure your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network to avoid unnecessary data usage while downloading the update.
- Go to “Settings”: Open the “Settings” app on your iOS device.
- Search for “General”: Scroll down and tap on “General”.
- Tap on "Software Update": Find the "Software Update" option and tap on it. Here you will see if there is a new iOS version available for your device.
- Download and install the update: If a new iOS version is available, tap "Download and Install". Your device will then begin downloading the update. Make sure your device has sufficient battery power or is connected to a power source during the update process.
- Follow the on-screen instructions: Once the update has downloaded, you will receive on-screen instructions to start the installation. You may need to agree to the terms of use or enter your access code.
- Wait while the update is installed: Your device will install the update. This may take some time, so make sure your device is not interrupted during the process.
- Restart: After installation, your device will automatically restart with the updated iOS version.
