August 22, 2020. The day we deplete the planet. Earth Overshoot Day , the moment when humanity has exhausted all its natural resources for the year. Normally, this date moves forward each year. In 1970, it was still December 29th, last year it was July 29th.

But then came the coronavirus. Lockdowns, grounded air traffic, factories closed. The pandemic that turned our lives upside down unexpectedly gave the planet three weeks of breathing room . The proof that radical change is possible is there. Not through major climate summits, but through a virus.

The question is: will we learn from this lesson? Or will we simply go back to our old habits, including buying brand-new items, even though a refurbished iPhone or MacBook works just as well and saves tons of CO2?

August 22, 2020, marked a significant day in environmental history. For the first time in decades, Earth Overshoot Day (EOD) was moved back instead of forward. This date, the moment when humanity has exhausted all its natural resources for the year, arrived three weeks later than in 2019. This was a direct consequence of global lockdowns, halted industries, and drastically reduced air travel during the coronavirus pandemic.

The numbers don't lie. While we ran out of our annual supply by July 29th in 2019, we were given almost a month of extra time in 2020. The proof that radical change is possible was suddenly there for the taking. Not through years of climate negotiations or major international treaties, but through a virus that brought the world to a standstill.

From December to July: half a century of overexploitation

To understand the gravity of the situation, we have to go back to 1970. Back then, Earth Overshoot Day didn't fall until December 29th. We lived almost year-round within the limits of what our planet could provide. Fifty years later, that picture has completely shifted. The shift happened alarmingly quickly:

Each year, the date has shifted forward an average of two to three days. This trend means we're increasingly demanding more from our planet than it can provide. In 2019, we needed 1.75 Earths to meet our needs. We're literally living on credit from future generations.

Green recovery packages make the difference

The pandemic forced governments worldwide to take action. But instead of simply returning to normal, many countries opted for a greener course. The European "Next Generation EU" recovery plan earmarked a whopping 30 percent of its total €750 billion budget for green initiatives. An unprecedented investment in sustainability.

The Farm to Fork initiative adds another €20 billion annually. This money goes directly to the development of a healthy and environmentally friendly food system. Governments outside Europe are also taking major steps. China announced ambitious reforestation projects, while several US states launched their own green deals.

Business takes responsibility

It's not just governments that are taking action. Business for Nature, an international coalition, now has more than 1,200 companies taking concrete steps in the areas of nature and the environment. Four hundred of them have committed to ambitious goals to reverse nature loss.

These companies understand that sustainability isn't a cost, but an investment in the future. They see that consumers are making increasingly conscious choices and that green products and services offer a competitive advantage.

The question, of course, is: what can you do as an individual consumer? The answer is surprisingly numerous. The #MovetheDate movement shows that small actions add up to a big difference. Here are some concrete steps you can take today:

Tackling food waste

On average, a Dutch household throws away 34 kilos of food per year. That's equivalent to about 140 euros and unnecessary CO2 emissions. Plan your meals better, store food properly, and share any leftovers with neighbors or food banks.

More conscious consumption

Every purchase has an impact. Producing a new smartphone costs an average of 70 kilos of CO2. Choosing a refurbished model not only saves money but also valuable resources. A refurbished iPhone works just as well as a new one, but prevents 27 kilos of CO2 emissions. For laptops, the difference is even greater: a refurbished MacBook easily saves 170 to 200 kilos of CO2.

Rethinking transportation

Cycling for short distances, public transport for longer journeys. An electric car is an option for those who absolutely can't live without it. But the biggest benefit lies in less travel. Working from home not only saves travel time but also emissions.

Giving nature a helping hand

Plant a tree in your garden, start a vegetable patch, or hang an insect hotel. Small nature projects make your surroundings greener and support biodiversity. No garden? Then adopt a piece of forest through a nature organization.

The lesson of 2020: change is possible

The coronavirus pandemic taught us an important lesson. If necessary, we can live and work radically differently. The question is whether we will retain this lesson or fall back into old patterns. The initial signs are encouraging. Many companies are maintaining flexible working, governments are investing in green energy, and consumers are making more conscious choices.

But there's a warning: without structural changes, we'll quickly return to the old situation. Earth Overshoot Day 2021 fell on July 29th, just like in 2019. Proof that a temporary pause isn't enough.

Structural solutions for a sustainable future

The real challenge lies in creating systems that make sustainability self-evident. A circular economy, where products are designed for reuse and recycling. An energy transition, where fossil fuels make way for renewable resources. Nature restoration, where we not only stop destruction but actively restore what has been lost.

Refurbished products are a perfect example of such a structural solution. They extend the lifespan of electronics, reduce the demand for new raw materials, and make sustainable choices affordable. A refurbished device is often hundreds of euros cheaper than a new one, while offering comparable quality.
